One of the best ways to add some color and personality to any space is by putting up wallpaper. Whether you're into bold, vibrant patterns or designs that are more subtle and traditional, wallpaper can make a huge difference in the way a room looks and feels. And with so many options available in a huge variety of colors and textures, you can be sure to find a wallpaper that perfectly fits the vibe of your home.

We researched dozens of wallpaper brands and designs, evaluating them on ease of application, price, and quality. We also interviewed Brenda Kondor, the Website Manager at Wallpaper Warehouse, for tips on finding and choosing the right wallpaper for your space.

Here, the best wallpapers that'll elevate any room.

Who it's for: People who like minimalist, simple patterns.

Who it isn't for: People who like bright colors and bold designs.

Designed in an elegant and versatile off-white and charcoal color scheme, this minimalist wallpaper features a simple geometric pattern with lots of long lines moving in various directions. It's a peel and stick wallpaper, so it's super easy to install, move around, and take off the wall as needed, and it's also fade- and stain-resistant, which increases its longevity. It's the perfect wallpaper to decorate a guest room or kitchen, but it can also look great in an office or even a bedroom, depending on the style of the rest of your home decor.

Also available at Home Depot, Bed Bath & Beyond, and RoomMates.

Who it's for: People who like Scandi-inspired, minimalist designs.

Who it isn't for: People looking for bright and colorful wallpaper.

If you like Scandi-inspired style and home decor that'll make you feel relaxed and at ease, consider this sophisticated option from RoomMates. Available in four colors (beige, gray, dark gray, and navy), this wallpaper has a faux texture pattern filled with tiny arrow-like shapes going up and down the length of the roll. It's a cozy, neutral print that will blend into any room while brightening up your space. Plus, the paper's peel-and-stick application process means you don't have to spend precious time and effort dealing with taking it on and off your walls whenever you want to reposition it to a different location.

Also available at Anthropologie, Wayfair, and Home Depot.

Who it's for: People who like elevated traditional decor.

Who it isn't for: People who lean more modern.

This traditional-style wallpaper is designed to be timeless, with a pattern inspired by French palace gardens and full of florals, greenery, and even a few birds. We suggest putting this print up in a guest room or bathroom to create serene and sophisticated vibes, but the sky's really the limit with this one. It can also work well as an accent wall, especially if you choose one of the darker colors (there are five options available). It's not peel and stick though, so you'll have to take care of installation yourself—Rifle Paper Co. recommends hiring a professional to make the process as seamless as possible.

Who it's for: People who want a playful pattern for a nursery or playroom.

Who it isn't for: People who are looking for office or living room decor.

Although this wallpaper is a bit pricier than most others, it's worth the cost if you want a seriously unique and fun design that's bound to brighten up any space. This design features a beautiful pattern of giraffes, elephants, zebras, and more alongside trees and other flora found in the African savanna. It's a creative, imaginative print that'll look especially great in a nursery or playroom, and it comes in three color options. To install this highly durable and washable paper, just spray it with water and then stick it right onto the wall. When you need to remove it, use water and it'll come right off.

For a quick and easy application process, look for wallpapers that are peel and stick, since all that's required is placing it directly onto the wall and peeling it off when you're done, no tools or hassle needed. "It is easy to hang and easy to remove without damaging the wall behind it," says Kondor. For longer-lasting wallpaper, you might want to go for paper that's listed as being non-pasted or affixed to the wall—while applying it may require a bit more work, it'll ensure that the paper stays on for years to come.

Some wallpapers are designed to be totally flat and smooth, while others are made to feel textured, especially those with faux brick or wood patterns. If you're not sure whether a textured wallpaper is right for you, Kondor advises ordering a sample of a pattern you like ahead of time. "Tape the sample to your wall and leave for several days to see if it's a good fit for you and your room," she says.

There are so many patterns to choose from when it comes to wallpaper, ranging from animal print to geometric to florals. It comes totally down to a matter of taste, so when shopping, make sure you pick a pattern that fits both your personal style and the vibe of the room it's going to be in. Still, "traditional designs such as florals, damasks, and stripes never go out of style," notes Kondor, so those wallpapers are typically a safer bet.

"It is important to remember not all wallpaper is hung the same way," Kondor says, adding that it's crucial to follow the manufacturer's directions that come with the wallpaper. First of all, preparation is key. You'll need to ensure that your walls are flat, with no bumps or holes. If you're installing non-peel and stick wallpaper, it's a good idea to seal your walls with primer to ensure application is as smooth as possible. You should also map out the design before you start cutting and applying to lessen the chance of making a mistake.

Traditional wallpaper requires tools for application, like an adhesive, a level, and a smoother. This is where following the manufacturer instructions is most crucial, as different brands have different application methods. If you're installing peel and stick wallpaper, the process will go a little faster. Although using a level is still a good idea, all you really have to do is apply from the top down, work slowly, and smooth out bubbles as you go.

First, you need to figure out the square footage of the space you're wallpapering, says Kondor. "To do this, you will want to measure the height and width of each wall you plan to cover as well as the height and width of any deductions such as doors and windows," she advises. Once you've figured those things out, you can look at the square footage of the pattern you've picked to determine the number of rolls needed.

Yes, as long as you use paintable wallpaper, says Kondor, as "this type of wallpaper tends to be thick and heavily textured." Otherwise, you should remove the wallpaper before painting.
